I'M GONNA BE DAD! (Week 87)

This week was pretty good, I felt like we worked a lot more and despite the baptisms not working out (again) we had plenty of people at church and we are set to have at least one this week!

Our district meeting was interesting this week. Our district leader drew graphs of our weekly indicators in his notebook and passed it around. Looking at it, I was honestly a bit embarrassed. I felt like we had worked hard but evidently it wasn't enough. He called us to repentance and told us all (including himself) to do more. So that's what we did this week. Spoke with more people, walked with more purpose and changed focus area. Like it says in Preach My Gospel: "Work, work, work—there is no satisfactory substitute, especially in missionary work."

We moved focus area to Fazenda Belém and we began to find more people. It seems the missionaries hadn't worked there in a while or perhaps, ever. We met a man called Célio on Friday. We offered to do a prayer with his family and he politely let us in. We met his 9 year old son Davis, his other two small children and a lot of little cousins who were with them in the house. As there were no chairs in their humble house, we sat on the floor and began teaching the Restoration. I've never seen such young children pay such close attention! They were answering questions about prophets and Jesus Christ better than most adult people we meet every day. In the end, Celio and his older son accepted our invitation to go to church and be baptised. He explained how his wife had abandoned him and his 3 young children and was praying everyday for their marriage to be restored. Sadly they weren't able to go to church this week but we won't give up on them just yet!

We've been giving English classes here in Franco da Rocha for a while and it's always super fun! As every week someone new comes, it's not structured like a proper course but rather we just teach vocabulary and some conversation related to the topics. This week we taught professions and it was really fun! A young woman in the ward brought her best friend Leticia and she had a blast in our professions version of charades. To top it all off, she came to church the next day and even brought her brother Daniel.

On Sunday we went to pick up several people but found no one awake. We returned to the chapel a little disappointed but trusting in the Lord's hand. When we turned up around 8:20 am, there was a young man sitting there in the back of the sacrament meeting. His name is Gabriel and he is 18. The other missionaries here in the ward had invited him and he not only came but arrived early with his (very old) Bible in hand! He was glowing throughout the whole meeting. In Gospel Principles he asked some questions that left the teacher "answerless". He has an evangelical background so he knows a LOT of the Bible. He was asking me questions about things that I had no idea were even in the Bible. Just goes to show that I need to follow President Kimball's example and read the Bible from cover to cover (after the mission, of course). Anyway, Gabriel is currently frequenting the Baptism church but told us on Sunday: "You guys are almost convincing me to stay here." He really wants to become a missionary and has already read parts of the Book of Mormon. Please pray he will be ready to baptised this Sunday!

A few more people came to church including Adão and Roselia (brother in law of a member), Milton (an old man who is looking for a church) and Monique (the sister in law of a member). Monique is our firmest baptism for this week. She has been going to church for 3 weeks and has read the Book of Mormon in the parts we left for her.

As the blog title suggested, I'm going to train for the first time here in Franco da Rocha. President is only leaving one set of missionaries here in Franco, which hasn't happened in a loooong time. Hopefully me and my son will be able to handle the huge area (2 cities) and all the references. I'm really excited for this transfer. I'm gonna end my mission on a high!

We met Lightning McQueen and his Brazilian friend this week!

Love you all,

Elder Torres
