This post is an e-mail Diego sent to Catherine Donker as a reply when she asked for his help to share his feelings on "How seminary helps prepare for a mission". His e-mail along with e-mails from other missionaries where shared with the seminary students at a Multi-Stake seminary meeting in Cambridge. Here is what Elder Torres said: "Hi Catherine, I thought I was free from assignments all the way out here in Brazil!
But ok, I'll help you out! :)
Seminary was a great blessing in my life and an amazing preparation for the mission, It sounds cliché I know, but it really is. In the MTC, my instructor said that all the scriptures we learn and memorize and all the knowledge we obtain in personal study and seminary is put into our own "spiritual backpack". In lessons with investigators the spirit will go through your backpack and say: "Right, what has he put in here that I can use? Ah, Alma 7:11-13. Perfect!"
I really have found this to be true and all the scriptures and stories I learnt in seminary come to my mind at pivotal moments in lessons. The Spirit will bring things to your remembrance. Not new things or ideas you have not yet learnt. So LEARN! Memorize! It will help massively!! :)
In the MTC we had Book of Mormon reading as a district and we stopped after every verse and analysed it. No verse in the Book of Mormon was put there by accident of "just because". Try to see how each verse applies to you personally.
You are all amazing and I hope you're all strong and helping missionary work go forward!
Lots of love,
Elder Torres"
